i-Design 09 – is it real?

Virtual stuff in the real world

i-Design 09 is excited by the ways in which our daily engagement with interactive stuff has made the inexorable move away from the office and desktop towards an experience that is decidedly in the real world. Its influence is being felt in ever wider spheres of daily life.

Goodbye beige box

Whether it be the SmartPhone in your hand; the social worlds of FaceBook and its ilk; online shopping overtaking the high street; the installation that captures your presence in the gallery or in the street; a new entertainment space that is neither film nor game; or simply an acknowledgement that you've unavoidably become a target for digital lifestyle advertisers, this stuff is no longer confined to the beige box on your desk.

My digital life

The fact that the beige box is now almost invariably cool black or futuristic silver, and you carry it with you everywhere you go, barely enters into it. The hardware doesn't seem to matter any more, it's the activity that counts. Like it or not, we live digital lives in a digital world. Like all the best science fiction Spielberg's Minority Report was only barely fiction.

By stealth

This may sound obvious, but that's almost the point, we are all becoming constant computer users, by stealth as much as by conscious choice. It has become pervasive and immersive, almost invasive you might say.

i-Design 09 wants to know where we're going, by looking at where we're really at.
